Asthma kills as many people as malaria: asthma medicines must reach everyone

World Asthma Day is marked on 7 May, and internationally, medical professionals and researchers are taking the opportunity to draw attention to this too common chronic disease.

Every day about 1,150 people die – largely avoidably - due to asthma (malaria kills about 1,175 people per day). Yet with correct diagnosis and treatment, many deaths from asthma can be prevented.

AAI President Submits Testimony Supporting International Scientific Collaborations and Exchange

AAI President JoAnne L. Flynn, Ph.D., submitted testimony to a Senate committee hearing on “Foreign Threats to Taxpayer-Funded Research: Oversight Opportunities and Policy Solutions.” While acknowledging concerns “about threats posed by foreign countries and foreign nationals to U.S. national security and U.S. intellectual property,” Dr. Flynn urged Congress “to understand fully the collaborative nature of science and the urgent need for international collaborations if the U.S. is to advance science, foster innovation, and remain the world’s leader in biomedical research.”

 

Inborn Errors of Immunity Committee (IEI)

The IUIS IEI Committee held a meeting at Rockefeller University, New York. Their goal of providing a critical review of the recent biomedical literature and identify key publications that have reported novel genes that, when mutated, underlie monogenic immune dysregulatory conditions such as recurrent, severe and often-fatal infections, autoinflammatory disorders, autoimmunity, allergic disease and even cancer.
